Insuring Eligible Dependant(s) for the First Time

If you are under age 65, you have the option to insure your dependant(s) immediately when a ‘life event’ occurs. When you wish to insure your dependant(s) immediately, AFBS must be notified within 45 days of the ‘life event’. Benefits will be effective from the first of the month following notification subject to receipt of the applicable premium due.

If you are under age 65 and choose to insure your dependant(s) outside of the ‘life event’ timeframe, a 6-month waiting period will apply. Benefits will be effective from the first of the month following the conclusion of the waiting period and subject to receipt of the applicable premium due.

The following are provided as typical ‘life events’ when considering insurance benefits for eligible dependant(s):

  • Acquiring a spouse/partner;
  • Birth or adoption of a child;
  • Dependant(s) insured elsewhere losing their access to similar benefits.

To add dependant coverage for the first time:

  • Contact AFBS to obtain the additional premium cost;
  • Complete the Dependant Information & Over Age Dependant form which is available here;
  • Send your completed form and payment of any additional premium due to AFBS.

Please note that newborns are eligible for insurance on the later of 15 days of age or the date of discharge from hospital.

Your revised Statement of Insurance Benefits will be sent to you confirming that dependant coverage has been added.
